MBA - Is it worth the name?

Posted 6 months ago I am thinking about applying to business school and really want to know - is the name worth it ? I will have to take a massive loan for Harvard, Wharton and some big names, but am able to do better with a public, "second tier" university. Help! |

| Posted 6 months ago Hi JLShah, your predicament is one that many face. Undoubtedly, the "name" stands as a proxy for your accomplishments when you are being interviewed for a job. They just assume that you have certain credentials if you went to a specific branded college. Also, those networks tend to be pretty wide, and they always take care of each other. But, is it worth your taking on a massive loan and being miserable for the next 10 years trying to pay it back? I don't think it is. You can go to a "second tier" school, but remember that you will have to work harder and more aggressively to get where you want to be. |

| Posted 6 months ago I agree with Kaamna. You can always supplement you rnetwork through conferences and actively jotting down names and emails. When you meet someone you think is a good contact, make sure to send them an email. And get toegether with them at least once every couple months. |

| Posted 5 months ago I'm thinking about business school as well, and my thought is that name isn't as important as the community of people it puts you in contact with. I'm particularly interested in Stanford, not because of the classes there or the Stanford diploma, but because I've heard of so many interesting projects that start there. |

| Posted 5 months ago Are there any MBA's here that can comment on this. Supposedly the money you invest for an MBA is recovered pretty quickly with the direction that ones career takes after an MBA and that is Masters in Business Administration, and not Major Bullshit Artist. |

I am going to start my EMBA at Washington University Olin School of Business which is around 90,000. Luckily I am able to get a pretty good tax break on that so I am not taking a loan out for it. |

| Posted 4 months ago I agree with jeetunanda - most of the time you should test the waters before going into business schools. Try working at an entry-level position with a company that employs MBAs, ask them if they were sponsored and see if that is the right route for you. You may decide it isn't but in the meantime you won't be going into debt - in fact you'll be saving money. |
