it depends. bombay's infrastructure is falling apart and the pollution is awful. delhi is way ahead in these two areas and seems to be only increasing the gap. bombay housing is also more expensive than delhi housing. however, bombay is more alive and can be socially better. also, bombay mindset is probably the most progressive and more similar to the mindsets of those living in major US cities.

i vote for delhi!

i agree with rohit, that it totally depends. for example, one of the reasons that people move back to India is because they have family there. you and your wife need to figure out if you have loyalties in one place over the other.

delhi is looking much better from an infrastructure standpoint, but the culture is far too traditional for me, and not diverse enough (how many ways can you say "punjabi?"). Bombay is much more cosmopolitan, and has a buzz about it that not many cities in india can replicate (maybe bangalore comes close). real estate in both cities are crazy right now, but perhaps one of you has a company that can help you with rents, etc.

not to confuse you, but I would vote bombay, no questions..

like the previous posters have said, the decision is a function of your situation, family, job/career, and what you are looking for. It's a very personal choice.

And the fact that both cities have their obvious advantages and much-maligned disadvantages makes it even more difficult to choose. This decision is not unique to those moving back from abroad. A Delhi-ite when asked to move to Mumbai would not be happy there and a Mumbai-ite would find it very difficult to adjust to Delhi.

On a personal note, I would anyday prefer Delhi - not because I've been brought up there or because I have family there - but because of its feeling of openness (in a physical sense) and a pace of life that is more relaxed and less claustrophobic.

btw, its interesting to note that all three of you have called it Bombay and not Mumbai.

I think if you have doubt about whether you should settle in Bombay or Delhi. Definitely pick Delhi. You know why people who want to be in Bombay never have that thought thats why. I dont think there is any other place like Bombay in this world. There is no question about that. I think Bombay is even better than New York.

5 reasons why: 1. There is NO dropping of ball at the end of the year that wastes the time of millons of people who gather there and spend 10 hours of their time in cold waiting to see that ball drop. Come on people - get a life. 2. There is no gay parade in Bombay.3. There is no wastage of enormous amounts of energy as it happes in Times square. Everbody talks about going green and saving energy. Somebody tell that to New Yorkers. 4. It is such a show-off city. Bombay is such an earthy place where anybody can survive. That is not true about New York. 5. Bombay is cheaper than New York (I am not talkin about real estate....every thing else)
