While reading the IndiaOn article, Indian Immigrants Enticed to go Home I really got thinking. I have been here 15 years and have left my parents, my home to make it big here in the States. I stay here now because my family is too well settled for me to make a big move back to India. Curious - why are all of you here?

Something I have been thinking about a lot too.. Couple of reasons: With all the pollution and inefficiencies in India, we think America is better place to live in and frankly, we can't afford to live where I would like to right now. south bombay..
isn't that funny?>

I came here for a graduate degree and will stay a little bit longer because the opportunities for advancement are still greater in America than in India now, I feel.

Even though India is a diverse country, I find the diversity of ideas in US richer. There are no sacred cows here (may be literally). The long tail of niche ideas is very long and very satisfying.

And oh yeah...anonymity, the ability to start with a clean slate, second chances, core decency of people and their generosity of spirit - its a nice country!

My wife is from Mumbai and I'm from Delhi. We met and live in the States. India is appealing, but we can't agree on which city we would live in!

do you think the question will always plague you, or are you at peace with your decision?

This is an excellent unanswered question, The dilemma that hits everyone that hears "Welcome Aboard", and one can never conclude on it. One can only say what is pleasing or satisfying to them. Most of us come here with big ambitions in this playground of dreams. It is like joining the band wagon of defining own success.

i just got back from india and debated this with everyone i met. deven is right, you all define what makes you happy, and there are many tradeoffs, on either side - the grass is after all, much greener

Well for the record, I am not a Desi and wonder myself why we are here. My wife was born in Paris (and is half spanish) and sometimes Europe looks a lot more civil than here. I was born and raised in Calif with a sojurn to the east coast for school.

The last 8 years have been extremely trying for me.

Is there somewhere in India with an amazing world music scene, I already love the food, and a respite of too much technology ? Oh yeah, I need good surf and housing prices no worse than the bay area to boot.

Tall order, Paul. Bombay has a good international music scene, is not technology obsessed (but it is bollywood obsessed), but the housing prices are sick. Curious - would you feel more at home in europe?

Well I have lived in India a few years while I was a kid. So now I feel like a stranger in India. There is always an excitement while visiting India, but I realize I am far from blending in even if I try during my visits. Recently I have gotten the so called dual citizenship..Overseas Citizen of India. My whole family, parents, sisters etc are dual citizens now. My wife is born in England and raised in Texas. However, opportunities seem to be growing in India in all fields. I look at India with Nostalgia, but I am not sure I would be able work and survive there anymore, as attitudes and world views are so different.
