Are Indians Racist?

Posted 9 months ago It seems to me that Indians talk a lot about diversity in the US, but how many of us would balk if our children came home with a white or black mate? It all seems hypocritical to me. |

| Posted 9 months ago Good question - well explored in Mira Nair's Mississippi Masala When I got married, my folks were upset because I was marrying a girl from a Hindu family. At the time I said, "Mom, Dad, just be happy I am marrying a woman!" Heck, I thought it was funny. Now with 3 kids, living in the Bay Area, it's not that funny anymore! (Not that there's anything wrong with that.... some of my best friends are.... still....) So, I think I'll be happy if the person they choose to marry is (a) honest, caring & reliable (b) of the opposite sex ( c) clean - not into substance abuse, etc. (d) has a good education & job prospects. |

| Posted 9 months ago I think Indians are very racist - whether it's blacks, whites, other Asians. But I attribute it in a large sense to ignorance. It doesn't infuriate me as much as American racism which is really white supremacy under the guise of political correctness. |

| Posted 9 months ago I don't think it is racist if you want your child to marry someone from a similar background. I feel that I'm the furthest from a racist, but I prefer that my children marry an Indian and a Hindu. If they found someone they are very compatible with for the long run, who isn't Indian, I would be happy |

| Posted 9 months ago One thing that always makes me crack up is when desis call Americans ( white or black) "foreigners".. Sometimes, when I am in an all-dei crowd, I have heard people say things like " these foreigners" and has me ROFL! |

What is it about not being Indian and Hindu that makes a person a lesser candidate for your child, if the love your son/daughter, are compassionate and treat all people fairly what is the issue. Hmmm, I wonder if the tune would change if you were to watch your daughter or son fall in love with a Latino, Black or White person, only to be rejected because their paramour's parents wanted their child to marry someone of a "similar" background. It is unfortunate to see that even after obtaining a "good" education, some attitudes remain |

| Posted 8 months ago paul - i don't think you understand what i'm saying, which is disappointing assuming you have obtained a "good" education... i prefer that my children play tennis and golf, root for the miami dolphins, and become tech entrepreneurs. these are things that i love and would be happy if my children imbibed their father's culture and tastes. i certainly don't expect them to do everything that interests me.. they need to find their own calling. additionally, i will raise them with american and indian values. i know that marital success has a higher chance when people have similar values if all things are equal. however, all things are not equal... so, i would much rather them marry a latino or black person if they were more compatible with them over an idiot indian person. |

| Posted 8 months ago i have seen indians use the most derogatory terms on other "ethnic" communities, but they seem to be mesmerized by white people.. |

If there is a "gora" or "gori" in the cabin, attention is focused on making them comfortable. That is why these people love Air India. They do not give service to Indians though we pay the same for the flight. I flew Air India in the mid 80's and have not flown that since. Things may have changed, but these attitudes will take a long time to change. |

| Posted 5 days ago i read this post and i had to add my 2 cents..... The most biggest challenge i have faced is us indians dont treat other indians with as much respect or cheer as we treat americans.....this is while in america.....I wish we could put Indians first and have some little bit of appreciation for people from our own country...... i go to some "donuts selling stores" in New Jersey state all the time and literally every 1 of them is run by indians and i am totally surprised by the utter change in behaviour. i am indian and dont get treated the same way an american in that store would. for people who are not following my thought....i get treated horribly.....i dont understand why...... and yes just as people staying in bombay think anybody outside of bombay or from down south is not worth anything......that same thing goes along when it comes to racism.....people in india still give too much importance to the color of skin..... just think about this....how many ads do you see in matrimonial columns asking for a "fair skinned" beautiful girl.........does anybody say they dont care about the color of skin and care about character....heck NO..... BY THE WAY .....i am married to a very fair girl of course it was not arranged.....so I KNOW and she is from bombay.....city and am not so I really know what I am talking about :)......needless to say am dark....my friends used to call me KALIA the crow.....!
