Domestic violence

Posted 8 months ago Every one is aware of the problems of dowri in India, it is getting a bit better but still a menace in our society. It is sad when that becomes an issue for domestic violence for people who have migrated to the US. Here is a case, the boy came to the US some 6 years ago brought by his Uncle who has an IT company. The boy goes to India, gets married and brings his wife here. From day one, he starts beating her because she did not get enough dowri. The girl does not say anything because her father has a heart condition and also she thinks things will improve. They have a baby 2 and half years later, the violence continues, and infact worsens because the baby is a girl. Finally one day he beats her pretty bad and tries to strangle her and she runs out of their home, is helped by a neighbor and police is called. The guy spends a couple of days in jail. The girl obviously does not want to go back to him and files for divorce. The guy denies every hitting his wife, says the bruise on her face is because of a kick from their baby girl and not from him hitting her. Legally, there is no help available to this girl who has not worked here (though she is educated and can work but did not because of the baby). Is there any Indian group possibly legal, that can help in this kind of situation. The girl has to rely on an attorney assigned to her by the court, and the guy has a high powered attorney payed for by the Uncle that owns a company here. |

| Posted 8 months ago What kind of help is she looking for exactly? Is she looking for legal help with the divorce or custody? |

| Posted 8 months ago Legal help is what is needed as it is hard for someone who has grown up in India to deal with legal stuff here. |
