Calcutta

Calcutta

The former capital of the British Raj is known for its colonial charm, melodious language, and overwhelming crowds. Don’t get swept away- tuck our Calcutta guide into your pocket and be lost no more!

BEST FIVE STAR HOTELS

The Sonar (JBS Halden Avenue)- The natural choice for luxury seekers with its sprawling gardens, fine dining and spa facilities. Only downside is that it is a little far from downtown, but the escape from the hustle- bustle may be welcome.

The Oberoi Grand (Chowringhee Avenue)- Popular amongst Kolkatta’s elite, the Oberoi has been the five- star for decades in Calcutta. It is located in the center of the city, and is typically packed with Indians and foreigners alike (and NRIs, wherever we fall).

BEST PLACES TO EAT

(Calcutta has some fantastic mid-range eating options, with a mix of Indian and continental fare)

Peter Cat (Park Street) – Although this restaurant does offer continental cuisine, I would highly recommend the cello kebab, probably the most popular dish in all Calcutta. The atmosphere is pleasant, but really, it may as well not be, given how good the cello is.

Mocambo (Park Street) – Now this one we will recommend the international cuisine. Crabs, in particular, and at tremendous value for money.

BEST PLACE TO PARTY

(My correspondent confirmed one, but I know there are more. We’ll keep digging)

Someplace Else (Park Street) – The winner is this pub- turned- nightclub, featuring an eclectic blend of tunes and a “let your hair down” crowd. Bonus: Eateries on Park Street after a night of Bangla revelry!

BEST PLACES FOR DAYTIME LOUNGING

(Calcutta still retains its colonial character from the days of the Raj, which makes sight-seeing more worthwhile here than in many other Indian cities)

Victoria Memorial – Granted it’s not lounging, but this memorial – turned – museum is a grand structure, beautifully maintained, and a real testament to the glory days of the Raj ( you may have to suppress all resentment about the whole colonization bit – I know I have to.)

Eden Gardens: First time visitors to Calcutta may appreciate a trip to the first cricket ground in India, especially since it has been the site of so many displays of cricket fanaticism (1970, 1996).

BEST PLACES TO SHOP

(Calcutta’s the largest metropolitan city on India’s east coast, and takes its fashion cue from its west coast counterparts, although there are local treasures that you should explore)

Camac Street – A conglomeration of stores such as Westside, and upscale local designers such as Mona Pali make 22 Camac the first shopping stop for NRIs and foreigners.

Gariahaat Mall (Jamir Road)- Five stories of goodies – jewelry (fourth floor), restaurants (fifth floor), and more. The parking lot has been expanded and now accommodates 150 cars (wow!). I would look for alternative parking.

A few more places to party:

Aqua (Park Street) - one of the newest and swankiest places in Cal. Next to the Park Hotel, this is a poolside lounge with really cool design, lighting and people.

Tantra (Park Street) - very cool club attached to Park Hotel. House music.

Shisha - on the top floor of a shopping mall, this is a small, dark club with excellent music and crowd. Open late. Not sure which part of town it is in - went there for afterhours :-)
