Deepa Mehta’s poignant tale of politics, love and the turning tide in Lahore at the time of the India-Pakistan partition contains all the elements of a best picture: fantastic acting, spectacular direction, and a well-written story. It holds you at the point of tears but doesn’t reduce you to a sappy blob.
