myProdoktSpace is a new, social shopping site based in Chennai. The goal of the site is to making online shopping a ’social process’. What that means is that you connect with your friends, discover new products, share ratings and reviews about the products, create wishlists etc. A user is naturally more likely to trust ratings and recommendations from their trusted network of friends.

In its current form, I did not see a ‘buy’ option on the site for any of the products. Normally a ‘buy’ button on such a site would lead to the actual retailer itself. The referrer site, in turn, gets a small fee. I questioned the founders about their biz model and as per them, they are in talks with several retailers before adding a ‘buy’ link for the products.
While I’m sold on the idea of social shopping, I just dont think the Indian online space is quite ready for it yet. On the whole, online shopping in itself is yet to realize its true potential in India. Social shopping comes later. Lack of widespread online credit card usage is another challenge that the site faces. But thats my gut feeling. It’d be great if these guys prove me wrong.
